Meet your favorite video game composer: Lena Chappelle

Lena Chappelle, also known as Lena Raine, is a rising powerhouse in the gaming industry. If you haven’t heard of her, you’ve almost certainly heard her great music. Great epic tunes to Minecraft, to the warlike frenzy of Guild Wars 2, his sounds are everywhere. She’s an incredible songwriter and her career is just heating up. His story is also very inspiring both for people in the gaming industry and for anyone else on this old blue marble we call home.

She grew up in a home where making music wasn’t a big deal. His father is a violinist and composer and passed on part of his passion to the next generation. Chappelle talks about doing her first song as soon as she can walk. She fell in love with creating music and MIDI soundtracks in her youth, then followed her passion by pursuing a degree in music. Applying for jobs right out of college, she ran into dead ends, but eventually found her way into quality assurance, eventually landing a job in design and typesetting. And we’re glad she did because she gave us absolute firecrackers of Minecraft and Guild Wars 2. And also a game whose music is its DNA, Celestial.

Her experience of coming out as a transgender woman after already starting her career is a heartwarming tale. She talks about the feelings of acceptance and support she felt from her colleagues and community when they took steps to help her put her new real name on her already published work. And in an amazing and heartwarming case of the internet doing something right for once, she shares how community members updated her wiki to reflect her transition before she even thought of doing so. She is well aware that the support she has received in the workplace is not the norm for many people in transition, and her visibility is helping to ensure that this becomes the norm.

She also has a great taste for video game soundtracks. Its number one recommendation is NieR, and we wholeheartedly agree.
