Mog Asom-2! Disco King Bappi Lahiri’s Connection with Kodiyal’s Konkani Singers Joel Rebello and Darrel Mascarenhas, where Bappi had sung a Konkani song ‘Rani Muji Go Tu’ which was incorporated into the Konkani music album ‘Mog Asom-2’ compiled by Joel and Darrel , and was released on Christmas Eve on December 24, 2017. The album was awarded as “Best Album of the Year 2020” by the World Music Award in February 2020.

Mangaluru: The man who brought disco into the mainstream in the 80s, set foot all over India, Bappi Lahiri will forever be remembered as the musician who brought disco into the mainstream and catapulted its rise – and it’s worth noting that he had a bit of a connection with the two Konkani singers of Kodiyal/Mangaluru, Joel Rebello and Darrel Mascarenhas, by returning his voice for a Konkani song “Rani Muji Go Tu”, incorporated into the Konkani music album “MOG ASOM”! The album was awarded as “Best Album of the Year 2020” by the World Music Award in February 2020. Before the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, “Jimmy Jimmy, Aaja Aaja” by Bappi Lahiri, a popular disco-pop number from “Disco Dancer” by Mithun Chakraborty, was a huge hit in the USSR (Russia) of the 80s Deprived of any “Western” popular culture, the country began to vibrate with the disco version of Lahiri. Shimmering combinations, hundreds of twinkling light bulbs and Chakraborty’s pelvis movements accompanied by Lahiri’s synths, horns, rhythm guitars and syncopated bass lines. Lahiri, 69, who heralded disco-pop and ruled film music in the 70s and 80s with a string of chart-topping songs, died in Mumbai on Tuesday due to obstructive sleep apnea. He had been hospitalized for almost a month and did not return home until Monday. He is survived by his son Bappa Lahiri and his daughter Rema Lahiri.

Bappi Lahiri was an outstanding singer-songwriter. His songs have found popularity not only in India but abroad. His diverse lineup included youthful and soulful melodies. His memorable songs will long continue to delight listeners. His music was all-encompassing, beautifully expressing various emotions. People of all generations could identify with his works. Her lively nature will be missed by all. Many of his fans are saddened by his passing, including our local Konkani singing duo Joel Rebello and Darrel Mascarenhas. “Mog Asom-2” by Darrel Mascarenhas and Joel Rebello (both from Mangaluru) with a song sung by Bappi Lahiri took Konkani Music to the next level, when ‘Mog Asom-2 was released on Christmas Eve on December 24, 2017 Konkani music fans during the 2017 Christmas season were overwhelmed after the release of the album. No doubt “Mog Asom 2” – was a unique album with a full set of a variety of songs and achieved record sales in the Konkani music industry.

With the release of Mog Asom-2, Konkani music lovers everywhere were treated to a next level of interpretation by the duo, Joel and Darrel. After a decade of the release of Mog Asom, Joel Rebello, the composer of Mangaluru, along with his friend Darrel Mascarenhas who was then working in the United States, and now moved to Dubai, released Mog Asom 2, which Bollywood bigwigs were doing integral part. Released in 2007, the original ‘Mog Asom’ had created ripples in its time and one of its songs, Ye Naari Ye, sung by Remo Fernandes achieved cult status not only in Konkani functions but also a favorite band through Tulunadu till date.

The legendary songs of Usha Uthup and Mangaluru Gurukiran in Mog Asom 2 served as the icing on the cake. Bassist Mohini Dey, who has worked with veterans like Zakir Hussain and AR Rahman, had also worked on the album. Mog Asom 2 features 13 songs, five of which are remakes dedicated to timeless musicians Konkani-Wilfy Rebimbus (instrumental), Eric Ozario, Henry D’Souza, Patrao Brothers and Alex Madtha. The album also includes a song by Portuguese singer Gonzago Cutinho and Spanish artist Gina Bragin. The mixing-mastering was done in one of the best equipped and most advanced studios in the United States by none other than Darrel Mascarenhas himself.

Speaking to the Mangalorean team, Joel Rebello said, “Bappi Dada is the reason we started planning Mog Asom-2. Initially, it was our friend Vijay Mascarenhas from Puttur who motivated us to start the project and we launched it with an empty file named ‘Mog Asom-2. But Darrel and I were very sure that only if Bappi Dada sings the Konkani song “Rani Muji Go Tu” written and composed by Alex Madtha (Puttur), we would continue to move forward and produce the album. Even though it took a few years to complete the album, Darell and I are very privileged to have recorded this song with none other than the legendary “Disco King” Bappi Lahiri. He will always remain in our hearts forever. RIP Bappi Dada”.

Joel added, “Even though the production of the Mog Asom-2 was an expensive affair, we did it purely for the love of music and for the purpose of boosting Konkani music. With the advent of social media, songs are circulating online and few musicians can deal with it. However, we are happy to have played our part in revolutionizing the Konkani music world. And by partnering with Bappi Lahiri, we gained more name and fame. For me and Darell, music is beyond taste and a hobby for us. Music is our passion and an essential part of our life.“

Joel Rebello and Darell Mascarenhas certainly need no introduction, as their unparalleled quality and award-winning work has kept them shining and at the top of the charts. But for those who know them a little, here is a brief presentation of the duo.


Since his childhood outside of academics, Joel Rebello has been actively involved in the entertainment business and is incredibly active to this day. He was the backup singer for Lucky Ali of Bollywood fame. Joel was the only singer chosen from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka (winning group) for the MoneyGram International Cricket for Peace initiative during the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Performing for over 200 shows on different platforms, he continues to keep the audience captivated and swinging. to his music to this day. Currently, he is working as a promo producer and radio commercials programmer for an FM radio station.


Darrel has left no stone unturned with his incomparable accomplishments. He graduated with the honor of receiving the “Advanced Achievement Award” at Full Sail University, USA, where he received his degree in Recording Arts. Darrel has produced the background score for documentaries and worked as an assistant for films, namely “Minions”, “Batman Vs Superman” as well as for famous television series such as “Burn Notice” and “State Affairs” and in as a composer for the “Desperate Housewives” series. He has worked as a mixing and mastering engineer and music programmer for various albums namely “Un-masked” released under the banner of Universal Record Music and many more in different languages. He won the “Best Musical Arranger” award at the Maand Sobhaan, Konkani Global Awards as well as the “People’s Choice Award” for “Best Musical Editing” for the 48-hour film project, “Soundtrack—The Next Step.” Until recently, he held the position of Music Composer/Sound Designer at Video Gaming Technologies, Inc. (VGT) in Reno, Nevada in the United States, and now he is employed in a private company in Dubai.

The duo, ‘Joel Rebello & Darrel Mascarenhas’ had also produced the campaign theme song titled ‘Namo’ for ‘Prime Minister of India’ Narendra Modi. They have produced music and rendered vocals for TV commercials of major banks such as State Bank of India, Union Bank of India, Corporation Bank, Karnataka Bank, Dena Bank and many more and have also composed and produced tunes call for Corporation Bank, Karnataka Bank and UCO Bank. Joel and Darrel have also produced music for various products such as Campco chocolate, OXY face wash (the #1 brand in Japan – Rohto), IANT and many more.

They played “MTV Roadies – Season 7”. Adding another feather to their cap was awarded the “Winning Band” at the MoneyGram International – Cricket for peace Initiative, being #1 in the state of Karnataka and #2 internationally for their single ” Aao Gao” for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Their television commercial for Canara Bank won the Silver Award from the Public Relations Council of India. They have worked with legends such as Remo Fernandes, Usha Uthup and Guru Kiran. The duo continues to capture the hearts and minds of people around the world with their excellent musical quality.
