Lady Marmalade made its debut on our radios twenty years ago before the emblematic romantic film Moulin Rouge! But where are the singers now, and what has become of them?
Most millennials will know the iconic refrain do you want to sleep with me tonight? to classical song. Crochet, although in French, is understood worldwide. The reboot, featuring the likes of Xtina, Maya, P!nk, and Little Kim, sang those words as a link to the original song.
It was first published by R&B sensations Labelle in 1974. The story of Lady Marmalade was actually an ode to a New Orleans prostitute who wowed listeners with the direct question.
In English, seductive live means “do you want to sleep with me tonight?”
It was the perfect background song for the plot of the bohemian film Moulin Rouge! The tragic love story between Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor (Satine and Christian) was intertwined with classic love songs.
The film itself won two Oscars. The song won a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2002.
But the song was equally iconic – so now let’s look at how Lady Marmalade came to be…
Where are the Lady Marmalade singers now?
Although fans “recast” the line-up of the iconic hit themselves last year, we want to take a look at where the singers of 2000s Lady Marmalade are now.
In 2021, social media users are dreaming of releasing a reboot of the classic before it turns 20, it’s a legendary song on our playlists. The internet has decided that Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, Normani and Dua Lipa could be at the forefront of the revival, writes Teen Vogue.
The New York rapper, who was discovered by Notorious BIG, left her mark on Lady Marmalade’s reboot hit.
The Jump Off hitmaker served a year in prison for lying to a jury about a friend’s involvement in a previous shooting, writes NME. She served time in prison for three counts of perjury and one count of conspiracy.
A TV show covered her grief, titled Lil Kim: Countdown to Lockdown in 2006. In 2008, she released her mixtape MS GOAT and appeared on Dancing With The Stars the following year.
Her fifth studio album, titled 9, was released in 2019. The singer has also collaborated with Faith Evans, Fabolous and Remy Ma.
Nicknamed the Queen of Rap, or her alias Queen Bee, she has sold over 15 million albums and 30 million singles worldwide. Lil Kim was also named one of VH1’s 100 Greatest Women in Music, coming in at number 45.
She later teamed up with Aguilera again for her album Stripped, for the single Can’t Hold Us Down.
Lil Kim almost got his own reality show
She almost got her own reality show on VH1 called 718 Makeover — referencing the Brooklyn area code, where Lil Kim grew up. But the show did not air.
Lil Kim joined Aguilera on stage in 2019 to sing Lady Marmalade for fans. Music lovers were able to relive the glory of two decades later.
Funnily enough, years before the hit song was released. Lil Kim had a song called Crush On You, the lyrics of which say “And you can gitchi gitchi ya ya with the marmalade”. Some fans are wondering if it was a creepy premonition that she knew she would be part of Lady Marmalade.
Christina was “totally into it” from the start. The singer said it was an “exciting time” for her to sink your teeth into, and Lady Marmalade was. She said it was “undeniable that it was something that felt good for your guts”.
After singing her solo in the song, the star in total has released nine studio albums and six compilations. Aguilera has also been featured on 54 singles – both solo and as a featured artist – and has sold an impressive 75 million records worldwide. Billboard named her 37th on the 100 Hottest Women of All Time.
After Lady Marmalade, Aguilera released her fourth album, Stripped in 2002, which had Dirrty, Fighter, Can’t Hold Us Down and The Voice Within. It has sold 10 million copies worldwide.
The Genie In A Bottle hitmaker not only performed it with Lil Kim, but also invited Mya on stage for LA Pride this year.
Making waves in Hollywood
In 2010, she teamed up with Cher and Stanley Tucci for Burlesque. A film about a young woman who wanted to be a star. She ends up falling in love with a burlesque bar and aims for her spot as the headliner as the owner (Cher) tries to stop it from closing.
The following year, she became a judge on The Voice. Although hailed as the “voice of a generation”, the highest place her team has placed on the TV show is fourth, with Chris Mann. She coached for three seasons.
On June 11, 2022, she was joined on stage by Mya for the single. Aguilera also told the crowd that she was “honored” to have been asked to perform for the event, according to Rolling Stone.
Last October, the former Disney star also shared a new track Pa Mis Muchachas, in Spanish. It starred Becky G, Nicki Nicole and Nathy Peluso.
Singer Dirrty is set to embark on her UK arena tour this year in August. She will perform in three locations, including the capital London, reports NME.
Mya got involved when her management asked her a vague question about whether she wanted to sing with other women. Not even knowing what the song was, Mya said it sounded “really cool” so she was very open-minded.
After Lady Marmalade, she released her third studio album, Moodring, in 2003, followed by two exclusive records for the Japanese market – Sugar & Spice (2008) and KISS (2011). The It’s All About Me hitmaker has also created his own independent label, Planet 9.
The singer also starred in Dancing With The Stars for season nine and finished in second place.

Named 97 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Artists in the 200s in 2009, she has sold over 3.2 million albums in the United States alone and 7 million worldwide.
P!nk, real name Alecia Moore, has sold 135 million copies worldwide so far. The Most Girls hitmaker has also had several number one hits internationally, including Don’t Let Me Get Me, Just Like A Pill and Get The Party Started.
The singer also picked up a Grammy for her third album, Try This (2003), and topped the charts for her next two albums, I’m Not Dead and Funhouse.
Arguably one of the most successful singers and best-selling artists in the world, she has a total of three Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards and seven MTV Video Music Awards. P!nk also won a Daytime Emmy Award and the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
Billboard crowned her pop artist of the decade in 2009 and was the second most performed female solo artist in the UK from 2000 to 2010. She came only behind Madonna, who took the top spot.
She also received the BMI President’s Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Songwriting and Global Impact on Pop Culture and the Entertainment Industry”.
